Your will distributes your assets when you die – unless your assets have beneficiary designations.  Assets like IRAs, 401(k)s, and annuities typically name beneficiaries who receive the asset at your death regardless of your will.  And, of course, property held jointly passes to the joint owners.  Assets like that are called Will Substitutes and aren’t controlled by your will.  There is probably no estate planning subject as important as this one.  We’ll talk about the law governing beneficiary designations and present some ideas for how to handle yours.
